I used to spend a lot of time working on @freeride I used to spend a lot of time working on @freeride_ent NWD films with Axl, saw him again a couple of years ago in Sun Valley and caught up a little on what we've been up to and family life etc. This morning I learned he is fighting a battle against brain cancer. He's tough, and if anyone can make it through this, Alex can. But his family will need our help, link to help support them through this battle is in my bio. (Not my photo)
It's always a fun challenge for to shoot product w It's always a fun challenge for to shoot product with as little Photoshop as possible. This image of the @deitycomponents Deftrap Pedal with a @ridecncpts shoe was almost all done in camera. I used PS to remove the 6mm Allen that the pedal axle was on, and I removed some dust from the sole of the shoe. A fair bit of dust actually, shoes and grips are pretty sticky and no amount of compressed air will clean dust off of sticky rubber. I used 2 1x3 strip boxes with grids to light this from the sides, and one bare flash with a grid and a snoot as a fill light for the front of the shoe and to create the pedal shadow. I used a few flags to keep the light off of everything I didn't want lit, including the clamp that was holding the shoe in place. #ianhylandsphoto #photography #productphotography #studiophotography #sonyprofessional #profotousa #mtb

I never really thought of myself as a being a stud I never really thought of myself as a being a studio or product photographer, even though I've done a lot of it over the years. Even 15 - 20 years ago I was shooting clothing for bike and snowboard companies, a lot of glasses for @ryderseyewear, and products for @raceface catalogs. And while I don't get all that excited about shooting products on white backgrounds for webstore use, I've really gotten into shooting creative stuff. Part of creating product images is finding ways to visually express what you want to say about the product, and with the @deitycomponents Supracush grip we wanted photos that symbolized 'soft' and 'sticky' and 'cushy'. One of the concepts we came up with was this one. While we ended up using the ink clouds images for the actual launch I still like this one, what do you think?
