When news sports photography fails…

Warning – this is a very opinionated post! I just followed a link to a set of Olympic photos on the Boston.com website expecting to be absolutely blown away. And I was, except for a very different reason than what I had expected. I am completely blown away by the number of what I consider to be really horrible photos that made it into this list. 15 out of the 45 images on this page shouldn’t be there in my opinion, that’s 30% of them. She had already arranged for a couple of friends to model for her and wanted me to help out and teach her a little bit about photography. We spent an afternoon in her parents house playing with a couple of lights and then as the sun was setting we decided to shoot a few photos by the train tracks. It was really cold, probably below freezing, and windy. Not the best conditions for shooting partly clad models, but they were really good about it. I…

Teaching in 2010

Welcome to Ian Hylands website and blog for 2010. Last year was an amazing year and this one promises to be even better! You can check out the highlights from 2009 in a pdf in the downloads section, quicklink here. Teaching I teach an “Action and Sports” photography class as part of the Digital Photography Program at the Vancouver Institute of Media Arts. I’ve also started teaching a similar although shorter class at the Western Academy of Photography in Victoria. Through both of these classes and the large number of emails I receive I’ve come to realize that there are…
